Celluloid Egyptian Revival Frame
A great celluloid frame in the Egyptian Revival Style. There is a large pull toggle that is designed to look like a female pharaoh – possibly Cleopatra. The coiled hair is typical of Egyptian women it can be real or a wig. False hair was often braided in and the curls and braids kept in place with beeswax. The push button at the top shows a pharaoh wearing the Atef crown. The Atef Crown combines the Hedjet (the crown of upper Egypt) with two curly feathers on each side. In ancient Egyptian paintings, Osiris wears the Atef crown as a symbol that he rules the underworld.
